Glycerin is a by product of soap making. So if you have nitric acid, then you add the nitric acid to the glycerin, and there you have nitroglycerin. But unless you mix the two in a certain process and VERY carefully, it will explode prematurely. Just as the discoverer of nitroglycerin killed himself long ago in his laboratory, and his brother if I’m not mistaken refined the process.

I hate the word “Lye”. It’s “caustic soda” people. or Sodium Hydroxide.

My god man, don’t rat on about things you know jack all about.

Something crazy happens? Its called an exothermic reaction when the NaOH comes into contact with the water. Same thing happens with conc sulfuric or nitric. Now bog off and go read some literature.

nothing happens when you combine sodium hydroxide with water. if you add a bit of tinfoil it then a chemical reaction happens and it makes hydrogen.

Is lye the same corrosive stuff that i put down the drain here in teurope called Caustic soda? surely that stuff is so strong it will rip your skin to shreds!
Can someone tell me if that is what i need to make soap, because I already got some causic soda granules . They are very corrosive and u have to put on gloves and mind your eyes.the stuff i use for drains heats up cold water when u add it.I just need to know if its the same stuff as LYE..im confused.
    Thank You

Yep. It’s Lye aka Caustic Soda aka Drano which cleans your drains. It will seriously burn you if it touches you.
